How to Identify your AirPods Generation

”Which AirPods do I have?”

With multiple generations and incredible similarities in design, you may be asking yourself what AirPods generation or model you have. If you are looking to replace one AirPod or your case, it is important to know what you need by identifying your AirPods.

We are dedicated to providing you with the right replacement for your Apple AirPods. As new products are released over time, it is increasingly hard to know which generation or model you have and which AirPods replacement is right for you. 

Many factors can give you hints as to what generation of AirPods you currently have. These can include look, controls, model numbers etc. Identifying these elements ensures that you order the right parts.

Apple AirPods & AirPods Pro Replacements

Identify your AirPods: 1st Generation AirPods

The 1st generation of Apple AirPods released in December of 2016 and have since been discontinued (March 2019). Powered by the custom-made W1 Chip, the 1st Generation AirPods has paved the way for multiple following generations. Indicators to identify this generation include the following:

Controls:

By default, the 1st generation AirPods have the double-tap function set to use Siri (can be changed to other functions by the user) 

1st Gen AirPod Model Numbers: You can try to find your AirPod Model Numbers by going into your Settings > Bluetooth > Locate your AirPods from the list of devices > Select the information button > Your Model Number should appear as the following:

NOTE: If you are unable to connect your AirPods to your device to check with the steps above, you may be able to locate the Model Number on the AirPods themselves.  

The 2nd generation of AirPods released in March of 2019 and featured a more improved H1 Chip to bring additional functionality. These 2nd gen AirPods share an incredibly similar look with the 1st generation Model which could make it hard to tell the two apart. Indicators of this AirPod generation are the following: 

Controls:

The double-tap function is used to either play, skip forward or answer the phone (user set function)

Siri is activated by saying “Hey Siri”

2nd Gen AirPod Model Numbers: You can try to find your AirPod Model Numbers by going into your Settings > Bluetooth > Locate your AirPods from the list of devices > Select the information button > Your Model Number should appear as the following:

The AirPods Pro released in October of 2019 and also feature the H1 Chip. This generation can be identified by its design, as it is currently the only generation to have the silicone tip attachment (see pictures). The case is wider than the 1st and 2nd generation models. Other identifying factors include the following:  

Controls:

Single-tap to play, pause and answer a call

Double-tap to skip forward

Triple-tap to go back

Hold to go back and forth between the Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes 

Siri is activated by saying “Hey Siri”

AirPod Pro Model Numbers: You can try to find your AirPod Model Numbers by going into your Settings > Bluetooth > Locate your AirPods from the list of devices > Select the information button > Your Model Number should appear as the following
